Terms of Use

Last updated: June 2026

These terms cover both this website and the Chronicle Vault application. By downloading, installing, or using Chronicle Vault, or by using this website, you agree to the terms below. If you don't agree with them, please don't use the software or the site.

What you're getting

A Chronicle Vault purchase grants you a personal, non-exclusive license to install and use the application on up to the number of devices stated at the time of purchase (currently three). This is a license to use the software, not a transfer of ownership of the software itself. You may not redistribute, resell, sublicense, or share your license with people outside your own use.

You may not reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to circumvent the licensing or encryption built into Chronicle Vault, except where applicable law gives you the right to do so despite this restriction.

Your projects belong to you

Anything you create in Chronicle Vault, your characters, your manuscript, your notes, all of it, is yours. We claim no rights to the contents of your Lockboxes. Your files live on your own computer and are never transmitted to us.

About the .lockbox file format: Lockbox files are a structured format that Chronicle Vault is built to read. If you don't set a PIN on a Lockbox, the underlying data is stored as plain, readable text inside the file, technically accessible with general-purpose tools even without Chronicle Vault installed, just not conveniently formatted. If you do set a PIN, that data is properly encrypted and the PIN is required to read it, by design, with no backdoor. Either way, you can export your manuscript to PDF, Word, or EPUB at any time directly from the app, so your actual writing is never permanently locked to one piece of software.

Free trial

Chronicle Vault may be offered with a free trial period (currently 3 days) that gives full access to the application. Any project you create or save during a trial is a normal Lockbox file on your own computer, and remains usable if you purchase a license afterward. We don't restrict or alter your files based on trial status.

At the end of the trial period, continued use requires a purchased license. We reserve the right to change the length or availability of the trial at any time.

Refunds

We offer a 30-day refund window from the date of purchase. If Chronicle Vault isn't working out for you, contact support@chronicle-vault.com within 30 days of your purchase and we'll issue a refund, no detailed justification required. Refunds are processed through Lemon Squeezy, our payment processor, and may take a few business days to appear depending on your bank or card provider.

Purchases and Lemon Squeezy

Purchases of Chronicle Vault are processed by Lemon Squeezy, who acts as the merchant of record for all sales. Your use of Lemon Squeezy's checkout and payment systems is also subject to Lemon Squeezy's own terms.

License validation

Chronicle Vault periodically verifies your license against Lemon Squeezy to confirm it's valid and within its device limit. The application is built to keep working normally without an internet connection for an extended period using a locally cached validation result. See our Privacy Policy for more detail on how this works.

No warranty

Chronicle Vault is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. We work to keep the application stable and reliable, including the automatic local backups built into the app, but we can't guarantee the software will be error-free or uninterrupted, and we're not liable for data loss, lost work, or other damages arising from your use of the software, beyond what the law requires us to accept.

Nothing in this section limits any rights you have under applicable consumer protection law that can't be waived by agreement.

Changes to the software

We may release updates to Chronicle Vault that add, change, or remove features over time. We're not obligated to maintain any particular feature indefinitely, though we'll always aim to keep your existing Lockbox files readable by current versions of the app.

This website

This website is provided for the purpose of informing you about Chronicle Vault and allowing you to purchase or trial it. You agree not to misuse the site, attempt to disrupt it, or use it for any unlawful purpose.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Missouri, United States, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of Chronicle Vault will be handled in the courts of Missouri, unless applicable law in your jurisdiction requires otherwise.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we'll update the "last updated" date above. Continued use of Chronicle Vault or this website after a change means you accept the updated terms.
